Spend an hour with American independent cinema’s most prolific director, Alex Ross Perry, to discuss Pavements (MIFF 2025) and Videoheaven (MIFF 2025), along with his pop culture–laced body of work. Hosted by Brodie Lancaster.
Attending MIFF as a Bright Horizons jury member and to present his two most recent films – the kaleidoscopic musical docufiction Pavements (MIFF 2025) and the insightful labour of love Videoheaven (MIFF 2025) – Alex Ross Perry is among the most exciting and influential American independent filmmakers of the last 20 years. Moving between narrative, nonfiction and experimental formats, his work is energised by an enthusiasm for culture both high and low, featuring tender portraits of complex characters, chronicles of 21st-century anxiety and collaborations with some of music’s most iconic artists.
Feature film credits as director include: Impolex, The Color Wheel, Listen Up Philip (MIFF 2014), Queen of Earth (MIFF 2015), Golden Exits (MIFF 2017), Her Smell, Pavements (MIFF 2025) and Videoheaven (MIFF 2025); and as producer, The Sweet East (MIFF 2023). Perry has also made many music videos for artists including Kim Gordon, Sleigh Bells, Maya Hawke, Soccer Mommy and, of course, Pavement.
Brodie Lancaster is a culture critic, author and columnist. Her work has been published in The New York Times, Vogue, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork and more.
